Logistics planning is constantly evolving with the different needs of customers. More needs to be done by less people. And yet it is not impossible! In this module, trainees will uncover some of the key knowledge and abilities to help you project future demand for logistics services and not just adopt current best practices, but to develop them for the future!
Operational research (OR) encompasses a wide range of problem-solving techniques and methods applied in the pursuit of improved decision-making and efficiency.
Applications are abundant such as in airlines, manufacturing companies, service organizations, military branches, and government. The range of problems and issues to which it has contributed insights and solutions is vast. It includes:
- Scheduling (of airlines, trains, buses etc.)
- Assignment (assigning crew to flights, trains or buses; employees to projects; commitment and dispatch of power generation facilities)
- Facility location (deciding most appropriate location for new facilities such as warehouse; factory or fire station)
- Hydraulics & Piping Engineering (managing flow of water from reservoirs)
Health Services (information and supply chain management) - Game Theory (identifying, understanding; developing strategies adopted by companies)
Urban Design - Computer Network Engineering (packet routing; timing; analysis)
Telecom & Data Communication Engineering (packet routing; timing; analysis)
As logistics planning becomes more complex, this skills is proving to be essential for all future-focused logisticians.
In this module, trainees will cover:
- Project future demand for Logistics Services
- Analyse future logistics operations trend such as process structure, customer involvement, resource flexibility and capital intensity
- Analyse gaps of current logistics operating model with respect to key performance indicators, current industry best practices and future demand
- Physical Logistics operations
- Industry best practice for Logistics operations
- Network analysis using methods such as Dijkstra’s Algorithm and Ford-Fulkerson’s Algorithm
- Future business needs and trend projection techniques such as time series methods, linear regression, Holt’s method and decomposition
